Such positive news from Nepal cannot wait: for 36,500 people in one of the poorest regions of eastern Nepal, medical care is finally becoming reality. On 21 September 2025 we opened the new Golanjor Hospital – fully equipped and with an extensive medical team of specialist doctors, midwives, nurses and laboratory technicians.
Life-Saving Infrastructure in Record Time
With at times up to 70 workers, the hospital was built to be earthquake-safe in just 1.5 years. Despite landslides and destroyed access roads, the spacious, two-story and barrier-free building in eastern Nepal was completed many months ahead of the original schedule. With 51 rooms, the hospital brings together under one roof everything that modern medicine requires – from the emergency room, operating theater and delivery room to the inpatient ward, treatment rooms, laboratory and diagnostics, all the way to the pharmacy. Barrier-free sanitary facilities, waiting areas and supply rooms ensure that day-to-day clinic operations run smoothly.
For the families in the region, half of whom live below the national poverty line of 530 euros a year, care is made accessible by protecting them from the costs. “My child receives vaccinations and medicines here without my having to spend money I do not have. This hospital does not only treat patients – it protects families from debt and great hardship,” explains the father of a young patient.
Medical Services from Day One
From the very first day, patients have access to a wide range of medical services: a 24-hour emergency room with an ambulance, outpatient and inpatient treatment, comprehensive diagnostics with ECG, X-ray, ultrasound and laboratory, obstetrics, family counseling and vaccination programs. 98 essential medicines are dispensed free of charge. In line with Nepal’s health policy, almost all services are nearly free of charge; only symbolic fees apply, such as 50 NPR (about 0.35 euros) for registration.
Rooted in the Region
After completion, the hospital was officially handed over to the municipality of Golanjor and placed under the national health authority. A contractually secured partnership between the municipal, provincial and national levels, with a budget firmly anchored in the public spending plans, guarantees ongoing operation. The hospital is thus anchored for the long term within the country’s structures – carried by the people on the ground.
